If there is a gourmet Judgment Day, Damien and Agnes Vanderhoeven are assured of their salvation. They will draw a tear from the man in charge of the scales of justice, as he invites them to take their places among the righteous. They are deemed righteous because, every day God provides, they make their daily bread – not forgetting the chocolates and petits fours. Righteous because, as far as possible, they use short cuts, such the excellent fish they order direct from Brittany - gaining a day or two of precious freshness. Righteous because they make us feel at home and work tirelessly. Righteous because they open up their cooking to the spices of world without neglecting local produce.
Righteous, finally, because they are not content merely to entertain, they also spread the good news through their cooking classes. A life dedicated to the gourmet cause should surely guarantee them first-class access to nirvana. In the meantime, we mere mortals can only register our sincere gratitude.
