To get away from it all you need to climb and keep climbing the hills around Dinant and you’ll find yourself in the one of the most beautiful villages that Wallonia has to offer. On the way take a pause to admire the sumptuous castle-farm that dominates the pretty village of Falaën. And it’s here, in countryside that could have been painted by a water colourist, that you’ll find la Fermette.
This isn’t a recent addition to Wallonian gastronomy — it first opened its door 40 years ago. The current couple who run the place were surely not even born when locals and visitors from afar began enjoying the food here, in a rustic house, tavern-like, of local stone and draped with ivy.
Enough of the history lesson. Several years ago Sarah Bohet and Michaël Vancraeynest took over the place and have made a great job of it. It was clever of them to retain some of the unbeatable dishes of the restaurant’s heyday then adding their own touch with some modern ones, yet still following the seasonal changes in the markets. We like places like this where simplicity and authenticity are the bywords.
